Reboot: A Short Story

This is a short story that I wrote today on a creative prompt.
The prompt is ” His mind went numb as he stared blankly at his phone. His gaze was centered at only one word… Reboot. “

His mind went numb as he stared blankly at his phone. His gaze was centred at only one word… Reboot.

Reboot, restart, refresh. The mind chanted.

And then the reality hit him, like an eight hundred-pound truck. Perhaps, that is what his life had become, a piece of machinery, craving for solace, to be shut down, and then sprung back, with new vigour. As he walked out into the main lobby of the office, he paused and laughed at the ironical message of peace that the corporate gives. The ride back home usually was a cacophony of notification alerts. Today, this faded away as the sound of the wind swooshing by took over. He rested his head against the window, slowly letting the streetlight touch his face, and then lurk in the shadows of his eyes. He breathed.

Mind clear, head held high, he rang the bell.
“You look different”, mother said. What happened?
“I rebooted”, he smirked.
