Presenting to you one of my random musings for today. It struck me out of nowhere and I spent some time marvelling at this. I’m talking about the art of talking to self.
Talking generally involves addressing your thoughts to a person. Talking to oneself involves addressing your own thoughts to yourself. Normally, there is a voice in our head that directs us. The next advanced level of this is talking to self. Normally, people associate talking to self as a sign of a mental illness or stress but this is a myth. Yes, symptoms of stress include talking to self but that is a different type of talking that involves mumbling or talking under your breath. We should normalise talking to self and I’m sure many people indulge in this action.
In this lockdown, while the importance of mental health is being advocated, I feel that talking to self is an emotional outlet for many people. Personally, I talk to myself more than I talk to others! Talking to self for me involves forming an immediate action plan as to how to tackle all sorts of assignments with varying deadlines in this online semester, me giving myself a pep talk or motivation before an important competition or graded evaluation, me trying to console myself in times of distress or anxiety, me letting out an exclamation or a sigh when I witness something surprising or shocking. As you can see, I talk to myself for a lot of different things. During critical problem solving, my mind runs several alternatives in parallel and this voice only makes me reassured towards my goal. Sometimes, you even tend to form new words by combining words of two different languages and that task is hilarious.
It has highlighted me on two occasions. Once, I was walking in my college. I was forming a plan by talking to myself. A guard, looking concerned, came towards me and asked “Are you alright? “. Another instance was when I was wearing my earphones, walking and talking to myself. My mother asked me after I stopped that who was I talking to, whereas I was just listening to songs and talking to myself.
Talking to self can be very beneficial as it builds your self-confidence. It boosts the emotional intelligence of a person. It can help in problem solving, conflict and stress resolution and motivation. Moreover, when you hear your own voice, you can work on your vocabulary and pronunciation skills. Overall, I feel it can be an important personality-building activity, for those who do it.

I love talking to myself, I am not very subtle more than half the time😅😅, so I get scolded for it.

I do talk to myself, but in my mind. And at times, when motivating or giving a pep-talk to mentally, I address myself in 3rd person. 🙈

I do pep talk as well rant, but it stays only in my mind. I would create a clone of mine inside me and would talk as if I do to a third person. That works, both for self-motivation and to lessen my temper, sometimes!

I used to do that too, back as a first grader. Day by day, I am losing that habit. Really don’t know why. 🤔🤔

Ohh, it usually changes with different phases in life. 😅

After the whole day, I talk to myself about what I’ve done and what should be. I think talking self is the best option to find a solution🤗.

I can totally relate to this post. My inner voice talks in my mother tongue, while I respond in English. So, basically I am an enhanced (subjective) mobile Google translate. 🙂

Intresting article. I too talk a lot to myself. That too in a third person mode. Have got so many weird looks from passer-by. Sometimes a person sitting next to me assumes that I am talking to them and they are like What!!.. and then I have to explain myself.
So I always keep my earphones near, so just like your mother others will also assume that I am talking to someone else. This way no one will think me weird.

Yes I can totally relate with you. Keeping earphones close surely saves the skin of self-talkers 💖😅

You have a lovely perspective of talking to self.
My mum always dissuaded me from childhood.
I do a lot of conversation in my mind without moving my mouth.
I do more of singing when trying to relieve myself of stress.

Of course I talk to myself. But only in my mind. If you keep on talking with loud voice, consider wearing earphones. Thus people will assume you’re talking on the phone and they won’t interrupt your thoughts like that guard. 🙂

I talk to myself everyday. It’s not that I’m crazy or anything, I feel it is better to express my feelings to myself. I have trust issues and all. Yeah, I totally relate!😊

I like to talk to myself in front of the mirror, to congratulate myself when I graduated from college and/or even to reprimand me if I did reckless actions at work due to stress. I avoid talking to myself in public because other people are not used to it. They would say, ‘you’re getting out of your mind.’ 🙂

I talk to myself quite often. It’s crazy I know😅. But I mostly do it as a form of reflection on my life. And at times to calm myself down, especially when I feel like I’m getting angry

A good read. Talking to oneself does help your mental health. The only person who is most interested in you is yourself, developing this habit is a boon.

I think most people talk to themselves either loudly or within. I do both. I often hear myself asking myself ‘ o la la what to cook’. I live alone so, no one is disturbed 😧.
On the whole, I love every inch of your article. Well done 👍🏼

I only talk to myself in my mind haha. One thing I do is address myself in the second person, and I find it much more effective especially in movitvation, because you can see yourself as someone you want to help 😊

Oh yes, I have a running stream going on inside my head..Something I love, is when I work with a virtual partner designing a virtual world, and we are both connected to headsets. thousands of miles away and when we are working on solving a problem for example, both of us chat to ourselves as we work and it strikes me so funny to hear myself and hear him at the same time having these little conversations at the same time… reminds me of the beeps and blips computers used to make in the old days when they were working on an answer:) Maybe talking to yourself , is the human equivalent:)

I talk to myself… but it is a subject that is often taboo. Many people might not be willing to admit it for fear of being thought of as not normal. But I think it’s more normal than most people realize.

Really liked your post !! The idea of talking to self is very normal .
Actually when we don’t talk to self or are not comfortable with talking to ourselves , that we create a chaos in our lives. So it’s very important to reflect and pause during the day and talk to self for few moments. It connects us to deeper subconscious and results are tremendous.
Good luck !
